The National Council of Teachers of English gives out the Achievement Awards in Writing to high school juniors. The award is in recognition of excellence in writing. Winners demonstrate writing ability in two forms: first, in a sample of their best writing,  a themed essay on a subject set by the Achievement Awards Advisory Committee and responded to by all candidates for the award in that year.

Each high school selects its own nominee or nominees. The number of nominees is dependent on the number of students enrolled in grades 10 through 12.
