The Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship is awarded at an annual conference at the Newseum in Washington D.C. One student from each state and the District of Columbia will be selected to participate in this five-day, all-expenses paid event held in mid-July.

To apply, you must complete two essays 500 word essays. In them you must why you want to pursue a career in journalism; and what characteristics make them a “free spirit.”

To be eligible, your journalistic work samples must have been produced for publication or for classroom assignments. The samples can be writing, photography, audio, video or other media.

The purpose of the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference is to promote the vital role of the First Amendment as a cornerstone of democracy, and to inspire students to pursue journalism careers.
