The American
Legion High School Oratorical Contest engages thousands of high school students
every year to gain a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Because this contest takes place on the
local, state and national level, there are hundreds of students who win
scholarships. Other objectives of the
contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think
and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the
duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
The contest
consists of a Prepared Oration and an Assigned Topic with specific time
constraints. State and local contests run annually in February and March, with
the national event being held in April. The three national finalists compete for scholarships ranging from
$14,000 to a top prize of $18,000.
To be eligible, participants must be
citizens of or lawful permanent residents of the United States. Contestants
must be students under the age of twenty (20) years on the date of the National
Contest and enrolled in a high school or junior high school.
